Sony prepares competitor for Switch and Steam Deck

Sony is preparing a competitor to the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck. What is known about the company's new portable console? A credible leaker reports that Sony and AMD have teamed up to create a new portable console…

The Japanese company intends to release a new handheld device. An insider suggests that Sony may be preparing to launch a PS Vita 2 with a chip from AMD.

The insider, known as Rythian, who previously leaked the PS5 Pro and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution specs, tweeted that Sony has approached AMD to develop a GPU for the new portable console. And it won't just be a gadget for nostalgia. Sony aims to claim a portion of the portable gaming station market.

According to rumors, Sony has requested a GPU with at least 2TF of power. This would make the device more powerful than the previous generation home console, the PS4, which had 1.8TF, and certainly more powerful than the Steam Deck (1.6TF). “Guess PS Vita 2 is coming after all”, wrote Rythian in X.

It is still unknown when the company plans to release the new console — perhaps in the next few years. Now is the best time to enter the portable console market. Nintendo and Valve, with their Switch and Steam Deck, have proven that there is demand for portable gaming. And gamers have long been waiting for the announcement of a full-fledged portable PlayStation.

As a reminder, in November 2023, Sony released the PlayStation Portal — a portable device with a built-in display, that remotely connects to the PS5 via Wi-Fi. Gamers can play games that are installed on the main PS5 console and use Dualsense.

Microsoft has also hinted that they would like to create a portable version of their console, similar to the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch. Currently, the market is experiencing a boom in portable gaming PCs: such devices existed before but were far more niche and less reliable.

It is also worth noting that in May, Nintendo officially confirmed the development of a successor to the Switch. The company's next console will be announced before March 2025, with its release likely in the second half of that year…
